Walk and Talk Therapy: Making Space for Yourself in Motherhood

Motherhood can be all-consuming. Between caring for your baby, managing the mental load, and adjusting to a new version of yourself, it can be hard to find time to check in with how you're doing.

As a perinatal mental health therapist, I know how much can come up during pregnancy and postpartum. Anxiety, birth trauma, grief, identity and relationship changes, and loneliness can be difficult to work through when you're already stretched thin.

Walk and talk therapy offers a different way to access support. Instead of sitting in an office, we meet outdoors and work through what's coming up for you while walking together.

How can walk and talk therapy help?

It creates space to slow down. When you're constantly responding to everyone else's needs, it can be hard to notice your own. Walking outdoors gives us an opportunity to pause, check in with your emotions, and explore what you need.

It offers a way to practise mindfulness. Not the kind that requires another app or a perfectly quiet moment. We can use the sounds, sights, and sensations around us to practice grounding ourselves in nature.

It can make difficult conversations feel easier. Some people find it more comfortable to talk while walking side by side than sitting face-to-face. We can explore complicated feelings about birth, relationships, or motherhood at a pace that feels manageable.

It gives you space to be a person outside of being a parent. You can love your children and still struggle with motherhood. You can feel grateful and overwhelmed, and miss parts of your life before having children. Therapy is a place where all of those feelings are welcome.

It offers connection when motherhood feels lonely. Spending your days caring for little people can leave you feeling isolated. Having dedicated time to talk openly with someone who understands the perinatal years can help you feel less alone.

Please note: Walk and talk therapy isn't about exercise or getting your steps in. It's about your emotional well-being, your relationships, and making sense of what you're experiencing.

Is it right for you?

Walk and talk therapy may be a good fit if you enjoy being outdoors or find traditional therapy settings uncomfortable. We'll also consider privacy, accessibility, weather, and whether walking feels supportive for you.
